Day-to-day life in Des Plaines, IL

Hi all, My family moved here when I was a kid. Crime rate is something to consider -Des Plaines sits at 94.9 per 100K. Median household income is $94,303, which feels pretty solid for the area. It's a a smaller city city with about 59,408 people. You can expect to pay around $1,435 for rent here. Poverty rate is 3.6%, which is pretty low. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

Pros:
- Friendly people
- Low taxes
- Good healthcare facilities
- Walkable downtown
- Good airport connections

Cons:
- Limited nightlife
- Limited dining options
- Limited cultural events
- Homelessness issues downtown
Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value food scene, you'll love it. The outdoor recreation is genuinely tough and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (East) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Seattle, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a real estate agent who relocated here from Charlotte about 9 years ago. The main reasons were family and retirement.

Pros I've experienced:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Good healthcare facilities
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Far from beaches/mountains

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are competitive, gas is better than expected.

Socially, the quality of life is solid. No regrets on my end..
