Desert Hot Springs in the winter -how bad?

Hey everyone, I'm a college student here and Household incomes average around $50,349 in Desert Hot Springs. You can expect to pay around $1,339 for rent here. The suburbs are where most families end up. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Thoughts? Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from Phoenix and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in South. It's pretty good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in finance. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.

People: Generally decent. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Thai.

Feel free to reach out with questions..

Public transit is improving here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I genuinely enjoy living here.

Hot take but I have mixed feelings honestly. I know a lot of people disagree but after 2 years here, that's my honest assessment.

I've lived in South for about 7 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's not perfect but it works for me. When I first moved here from San Diego, I was surprised by pet-friendliness. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Good schools in most areas
- Lots of new development happening
- The outdoor recreation scene is excellent

The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Dating scene is rough

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for retirees. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Came here for family and stayed because the quality of life is solid. The cost of living is honestly pretty good and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is job market. I love the pace of life here. Worth doing your research before committing.

I've been living here for 7 years and I'd say it's been a really good experience overall. The community vibe is excellent compared to other places I've lived. Overall Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a HR manager, 52, moved here 7 years ago from San Diego. I've lived in South and Pine Hills, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good healthcare facilities
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Road conditions need improvement
3. The public transit situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- South: Great for couples. tough vibes, walkable.
- Pine Hills: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Diego, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $100K-$100K here.

**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Weather-wise, the summers are decent and winters are stable. You get used to it after the first year.

Came here for weather and stayed because there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The community vibe is honestly underrated and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
