Is DeSoto still affordable?

Been meaning to ask this. I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Homes are going for about $282,600 on average. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Am I wrong here? The food scene here is surprisingly good. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 9 years ago from Austin and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Fairview. It's improving for what you get.

Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in construction. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.

People: Generally average. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: average. Tons of options if you like craft beer.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.

I've been here 1 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is solid.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Happy to answer more specific questions..

Used to live on the Old Town side, now on the Fairview side. Completely different vibe. I genuinely enjoy living here.

I've lived in Pine Hills for about 6 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

the quality of life is solid. When I first moved here from Baltimore, I was surprised by healthcare. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good healthcare facilities
- The walkability scene is underrated

The downsides:
- Homeless population growing downtown
- Far from beaches/mountains

Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for retirees. Happy to answer more specific questions..
