OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Boston and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Downtown. It's improving for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Asian.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are excellent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.
I've been here 14 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Meadowbrook side vs the North side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

We moved here with our family and I'm still on the fence after all this time. Schools in Sunset area are hit or miss. Kids love it here.

I've lived in West for about 11 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Raleigh, I was surprised by job market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good schools in most areas
- The community vibe scene is decent
The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Property taxes are high
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for remote workers. Good luck with whatever you decide..

As someone who grew up here, it's exactly what I was looking for. A lot has changed in the past few years though. cultural scene used to be much affordable but now it's hit or miss.

Weather-wise, the summers are pretty good and winters are reasonable. You get used to it after the first year.
