What I wish I knew before living in Detroit

Alright, Military spouse here. You can expect to pay around $1,034 for rent here. Homes are going for about $76,800 on average. Poverty rate is 26.9%, which is higher than I expected. With a population of 637K, Detroit is a major city. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The city has invested a lot in new development. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it was the best decision I ever made. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've lived in Springfield for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Houston, I was surprised by traffic. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Good schools in most areas
- Lots of new development happening
- The cost of living scene is pretty good

The downsides:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Limited shopping options

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for retirees. Happy to answer more specific questions..

My experience has been mostly positive. it's exactly what I was looking for. The only thing I'd watch out for is school system. Other than that, Definitely worth checking out..
