What I wish I knew before living in Detroit
Alright, Military spouse here. You can expect to pay around $1,034 for rent here. Homes are going for about $76,800 on average. Poverty rate is 26.9%, which is higher than I expected. With a population of 637K, Detroit is a major city. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.
