Not sure if this has been asked before, but I'm a college student here and It's a a major city city with about 637K people. You can expect to pay around $1,034 for rent here. Rent is about $1,034/month for a decent place. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Appreciate any input. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. I've lived in Springfield for about 13 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from Dallas, I was surprised by public transit. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Decent public transit for the size
- The housing market scene is tough
The downsides:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Limited shopping options
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for families. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 15 years ago from Raleigh and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Pine Hills. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in legal. If you're in engineering you might struggle.
People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like Indian.
Definitely worth checking out..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a accountant, 31, moved here 4 years ago from Tampa. I've lived in Sunset and Westside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Strong job market in several industries
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The cost of living situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Sunset: Great for families. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Westside: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Tampa, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are established. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $40K-$70K here.
**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
