Longtime lurker here, You can expect to pay around $678 for rent here. Household incomes average around $42,755 in Devils Lake. It's a a small town city with about 7,170 people. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Is this normal for Devils Lake? There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The city has invested a lot in new development. The city has invested a lot in new development. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Phoenix and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Springfield. It's challenging for what you get.
Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in marketing you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 3 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Italian.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 12 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is surprisingly good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Meadowbrook side vs the Lakewood side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Uptown. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like Southern.
Definitely worth checking out..

I've lived in Meadowbrook for about 8 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it was the best decision I ever made. When I first moved here from Houston, I was surprised by nightlife. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Decent public transit for the size
- The safety scene is decent
The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Property taxes are high
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for young professionals. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
