Dix Hills quality of life -am I missing something?

Hey everyone, My family moved here when I was a kid. Poverty rate is 2.0%, which is pretty low. Median household income is $219,636, which feels pretty solid for the area. The median home value here is around $891,400, which is pretty steep. The unemployment rate is 2.6%, which is pretty low. Household incomes average around $219,636 in Dix Hills. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The city has invested a lot in new development. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

Pros:
- Close to nature
- Lots of new development
- Walkable downtown

Cons:
- Rising rent prices
- Far from major airports
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Not enough green space
Does this match your experience? Thanks for reading. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The suburbs are where most families end up. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.

I've been here 11 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is tough.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Pine Hills side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The traffic is genuinely solid and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Westside) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Limited shopping options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Austin and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Pine Hills. It's pretty good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in education. If you're in engineering you might struggle.

People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Southern.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
