Random thought, Household incomes average around $58,706 in Dolton. Average temperature is around 53--F, so expect cold winters. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Am I wrong here? Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value housing market, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely underrated and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (The Heights) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Chain restaurants dominate.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've lived in Sunset for about 9 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I love the pace of life here. When I first moved here from Raleigh, I was surprised by cost of living. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Good internet infrastructure
- The community vibe scene is challenging
The downsides:
- Property taxes are high
- Chain restaurants dominate
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for families. Good luck with whatever you decide..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are surprisingly good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
