OK so We're a young couple and Rent is about $1,457/month for a decent place. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

As someone who grew up here, I have mixed feelings honestly. A lot has changed in the past few years though. pet-friendliness used to be much pricey but now it's underrated.

Used to live on the East side, now on the Riverside side. Completely different vibe. it's exactly what I was looking for.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.
I've been here 5 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into running, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Eastside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

I've lived in East for about 9 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I genuinely enjoy living here. When I first moved here from LA, I was surprised by walkability. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Decent public transit for the size
- The cost of living scene is pretty good
The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Limited entertainment options
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for singles. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Bought a house here in 2018 and it's not perfect but it works for me. Property values have gone up a bit since then.
