Not sure if this has been asked before, but I grew up here but left for a while. The unemployment rate is 3.1%, which is pretty low. The median home value here is around $225,700, which is actually reasonable. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Am I wrong here? Cheers. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The city has invested a lot in new development. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The city has invested a lot in new development. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The suburbs are where most families end up. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Hot take but I love the pace of life here. I know a lot of people disagree but after 13 years here, that's my honest assessment.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from Phoenix and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Pine Hills. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in government. If you're in finance you might struggle.
People: Generally better than expected. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Pine Hills for 6 years. Moved from San Diego for work. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is improving. We bought in 2016 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts.
**Employment:**
finance is strong here. education is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are wild for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it exceeded my expectations. The outdoor scene is challenging - we have biking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Pine Hills schools are excellent. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Nightlife is limited. Road conditions need improvement. And cultural scene can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For singles, I'd say this is a 7/10. It's not for everyone but it works for us.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Weather-wise, the summers are challenging and winters are growing. You get used to it after the first year.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is job market. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Worth doing your research before committing.

Came here for cost of living and stayed because it's exactly what I was looking for. The dating scene is honestly better than expected and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Meadowbrook. It's pretty good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in consulting. If you're in retail you might struggle.
People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: solid. Tons of options if you like seafood.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value food scene, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely hit or miss and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (The Heights) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. food scene is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
