Average temperature is around 66--F, so the weather is moderate. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.
Pros:
- Nice parks and trails
- Diverse community
- Good healthcare facilities
- Walkable downtown
- Active local events
Cons:
- Boring for young people
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Homelessness issues downtown
I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The city has invested a lot in new development. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 11 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is challenging.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Old Town side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a software engineer who relocated here from New York about 3 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Good schools in most areas
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Can feel isolated
- Homeless population growing downtown
Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are pricey, gas is pretty good.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

My experience has been mostly positive. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The only thing I'd watch out for is nightlife. Other than that, Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a chef, 47, moved here 14 years ago from Pittsburgh. I've lived in Cedar Grove and Springfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Decent public transit for the size
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited high-paying job options
2. Not a lot of cultural diversity
3. The housing market situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Cedar Grove: Great for remote workers. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- Springfield: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Pittsburgh, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $90K-$100K here.
**Final verdict:**

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely challenging and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Atlanta, be prepared for the culture shock. traffic is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
