Cost of living reality check -Durham

Been meaning to ask this. We have two kids and The unemployment rate is 3.1%, which is pretty low. You can expect to pay around $1,092 for rent here. Median household income is $120,778, which feels pretty solid for the area. With a population of 6,111, Durham is a small town. Average temperature is around 62--F, so the weather is moderate. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

Pros:
- Diverse community
- Good healthcare facilities
- Good airport connections

Cons:
- Cold winters
- Rising rent prices
- Homelessness issues downtown
Would love some local perspective. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The suburbs are where most families end up. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The weather takes some getting used to. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The weather takes some getting used to. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely decent and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Old Town) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from San Diego, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Bought a house here in 2023 and I'm still on the fence after all this time. Property values have gone up significantly since then.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.

I've been here 5 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into golfing, this place is excellent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Hope this helps!.
