Working remotely from Durham — my experience

I've been working remotely from Durham for 5 years now. Here's my take:

The pace of life here is perfect for remote work. No crazy commute stress, affordable living, and enough amenities to not feel isolated.

Cost of living: pretty reasonable
Internet: Could be better but workable with a good provider
Coworking spaces: A few good ones downtown

If you're looking for a place to WFH, Durham is underrated for remote workers.

Coming from Philadelphia, the cost of living difference is noticeable. Groceries and gas are slightly more expensive but housing makes up for it.

I'd add that the school system has been improving steadily. Otherwise spot on!

I'd add that healthcare options are better than most cities this size. Otherwise spot on!

Traffic is the worst part honestly. But if you live near work it's fine.

The food scene here is seriously underrated. So many great restaurants.

If you can afford it, Lakewood is the best place to live. Period.

Public transit needs work but they're investing in it. Should improve in next few years.

As someone who moved here from Seattle, I can confirm most of this. The friendliness of people surprised me the most.

Check out the Riverside area. Way more affordable and still close to everything.

Respectfully disagree about the cost of living assessment. In my experience, it really depends on your lifestyle.
