I'm single, late 30s, and Homes are going for about $207,400 on average. You can expect to pay around $977 for rent here. With a population of 6,468, East Flat Rock is a small town. Average temperature is around 56--F, so the weather is moderate. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Am I wrong here? The food scene here is surprisingly good. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 5 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is improving.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The The Heights side vs the South side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Austin and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Pine Hills. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in government. If you're in construction you might struggle.
People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like sushi.
