Best kept secrets of East Grand Rapids, MI

Random thought, Been living here since 2016. The median home value here is around $488,500, which is pretty steep. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

Bought a house here in 2015 and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Property values have gone about the same since then.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a data analyst who relocated here from Chicago about 14 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and weather.

Pros I've experienced:
- Active local events and festivals
- Close to major attractions
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Far from beaches/mountains

Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are reasonable, gas is tough.

Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Good luck with whatever you decide..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is job market. it's not perfect but it works for me. Worth doing your research before committing.
