Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. I love the pace of life here. Compared to Austin it's challenging.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a writer, 25, moved here 10 years ago from Boston. I've lived in Westside and Maple Ridge, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Diverse dining options
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Not a lot of cultural diversity
3. The outdoor recreation situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Westside: Great for singles. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Maple Ridge: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Boston, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $90K-$90K here.

We moved here with our family and it's not perfect but it works for me. Schools in Oak Park area are average. Kids love it here.

Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people

- Active local events and festivals

Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Limited high-paying job options

Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are reasonable, gas is underrated.
