Moving to East St. Louis -what should I know?

Hey everyone, I'm a remote worker and Homes are going for about $52,700 on average. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Property taxes are high but you get good services. What do you all think? Appreciate any input.

Used to live on the The Heights side, now on the Eastside side. Completely different vibe. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

We moved here with our family and I love the pace of life here. Schools in Riverside area are average. Kids love it here.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a chef, 56, moved here 5 years ago from Houston. I've lived in Riverside and Eastside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Property taxes are high
3. The safety situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Riverside: Great for families. surprisingly good vibes, walkable.
- Eastside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Houston, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is growing. You can live comfortably on $80K-$110K here.

**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
