Weekend activities in East St. Louis?

Hey, Poverty rate is 31.1%, which is higher than I expected. Rent is about $597/month for a decent place. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The city has invested a lot in new development. Looking forward to hearing from you all. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

The food scene here is surprisingly good. Tons of great seafood places. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

I'm a social worker and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. The community is challenging and there's always something going on.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a chef, 24, moved here 7 years ago from Portland. I've lived in North and Maple Ridge, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Good airport with direct flights
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Homeless population growing downtown
3. The safety situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- North: Great for couples. decent vibes, walkable.
- Maple Ridge: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Portland, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is growing. You can live comfortably on $80K-$120K here.

**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Came here for school and stayed because I genuinely enjoy living here. The housing market is honestly tough and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in West for 3 years. Moved from Baltimore for quality of life. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is better than expected. We bought in 2020 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.

**Employment:**
hospitality is strong here. finance is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are growing for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I love the pace of life here. The outdoor scene is solid - we have beaches within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. West schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Can feel isolated. Limited shopping options. And public transit can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For young professionals, I'd say this is a 5/10. It's not for everyone but it works for us.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's exactly what I was looking for. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are surprisingly good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Compared to LA it's decent.
