OK so My family moved here when I was a kid. Rent is about $816/month for a decent place. The median home value here is around $122,800, which is actually reasonable. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a software engineer who relocated here from New York about 3 years ago. The main reasons were family and family.
Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Diverse dining options
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are established, gas is pretty good.
Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 12 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is solid.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Old Town side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Hope this helps!.

Public transit is underrated here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's exactly what I was looking for.
