We have two kids (4 and 10) and are looking for a family-friendly neighborhood in El Cajon. Budget is around $1790/month for rent. We prioritize good schools and safety. Any recommendations?
Also, are there good parks and activities for kids in the area?

If you can afford it, Pine Grove is the best place to live. Period.

Great post! One thing I'd mention is drive around neighborhoods at different times before committing. Makes a big difference.

The job market has been improving lately. Several manufacturing companies moved in recently.

Can confirm the safety issue. But it really depends on the neighborhood. Lakewood and Midtown are perfectly safe.

Been here 20 years. The city has changed a lot but overall for the better.

Coming from Houston, the cost of living difference is noticeable. Groceries and gas are about the same.

As someone who moved here from Seattle, I can confirm most of this. The cost of living surprised me the most.
