Should I move to El Dorado or stay in New York?

I'm a college student here and You can expect to pay around $845 for rent here. Rent is about $845/month for a decent place. Crime rate is something to consider -El Dorado sits at 1,341.2 per 100K. The unemployment rate is 3.0%, which is pretty low. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Let me know your thoughts. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The suburbs are where most families end up. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The suburbs are where most families end up. The food scene here is tough. Tons of great craft beer places. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are underrated, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

We moved here with our family and it's been a really good experience overall. Schools in Highland area are surprisingly good. Kids love it here.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a pharmacist, 26, moved here 11 years ago from Atlanta. I've lived in Riverside and Pine Hills, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Friendly community, easy to meet people
3. Good internet infrastructure
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited shopping options
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The pet-friendliness situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Riverside: Great for retirees. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- Pine Hills: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Atlanta, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $80K-$80K here.

**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.

I've been here 5 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is better than expected.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The East side vs the Pine Hills side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The outdoor recreation is genuinely improving and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Fairview) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Austin, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Bought a house here in 2019 and I love the pace of life here. Property values have gone down slightly since then.
