Is it worth buying in El Paso?

Been meaning to ask this. We're a young couple and It's a a major city city with about 678K people. You can expect to pay around $1,041 for rent here. With a population of 678K, El Paso is a major city. Crime rate is something to consider — El Paso sits at 352.7 per 100K. Poverty rate is 15.7%, which is higher than I expected. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

Pros:
- Diverse community
- Lots of new development
- Good healthcare facilities
- Walkable downtown

Cons:
- Not very walkable
- Limited dining options
- Poor road conditions
- Homelessness issues downtown
Let me know your thoughts. Appreciate any input. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The weather takes some getting used to. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.

I've been here 9 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is hit or miss.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Sunset side vs the The Heights side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value walkability, you'll love it. The job market is genuinely hit or miss and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Highland) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Pittsburgh and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Midtown. It's average for what you get.

Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in government. If you're in engineering you might struggle.

People: Generally tough. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.

Hope this helps!.
