Things I wish someone told me about El Paso

I know this gets asked a lot but I'm currently renting in West Side and trying to figure out my next move. Property values in Canutillo went up 11% last year alone. Traffic has gotten noticeably worse in the past year. Thanks in advance for any insight.

I've been in Mission Hills for 5 years and I feel like {city} is becoming more expensive without getting better.. Honestly the biggest downside is {downside}.

Worked in government here for 8 years. I don't understand why more people don't talk about {hood}.. The market is pretty good right now if you're in that field.

Worked in logistics here for 12 years. I've never felt unsafe walking around {hood} at night.. The market is excellent right now if you're in that field.

As someone who lives in Sunset Heights, The suburbs vs city debate here is real.. That said, it depends on your budget.

OK since this keeps coming up, here's my definitive El Paso guide from someone who's been here way too long.

**Neighborhoods ranked (my opinion):**

Tier 1 (if you can afford it):
- Sunset Heights: trendy, pricey, but worth it
- Cloudcroft area: growing fast, get in now

Tier 2 (best value):
- Kern Place: great community feel
- Las Cruces area: newer development, modern amenities

Avoid (unless you know what you're doing):
- I won't name names but do your research on anything significantly below market rate

**Cost Reality Check:**
- 1-bed decent area: /mo
- 2-bed decent area: /mo
- Groceries for 2: /mo
- Car insurance: great compared to national avg
- Utilities: /mo average

**The Honest Truth:**
The food scene in {hood} is honestly incredible.. El Paso is growing but it's not for everyone. If you value affordability over nightlife, you'll love it. If it's the other way around, maybe consider Portland.

OK let me break this down from someone who's been here a while.

Las Cruces area vs Cloudcroft area: completely different vibes. Las Cruces area is more excellent with families and quiet streets. Cloudcroft area is up-and-coming and better for remote workers.

Cost-wise, expect /mo minimum for anything decent in Las Cruces area. In Cloudcroft area you can find stuff for /mo.

I feel like {city} is becoming more expensive without getting better.. Nightlife is decent if you know where to go.

Great question. Here's my honest take after 8 years:

The good:
- Good schools in certain areas
- Pet-friendly city
- Good farmers markets

The not-so-good:
- Road conditions
- Wind never stops

Public transit is {transit_feel} - you'll want a car.. I'd say for couples, El Paso is excellent.

I'll give you a thorough answer since I've been through this exact situation.

I moved to Horizon City from Austin about 2 years ago. Initially it felt a bit lonely. But after settling in, Downtown has improved dramatically since I first moved here..

A few things I'd recommend:
- Check out Horizon City and Northeast for housing
- Talk to your neighbors - people are friendlier than you'd expect
- Visit during different seasons if you can

The biggest adjustment was weather. I keep discovering new spots even after {yr} years.. Overall I'd give El Paso a 8/10 for couples.

Not to be negative but the food scene is overrated. I still like living here overall though. Just keeping it real.
