Random thought, I grew up here but left for a while. Homes are going for about $478,800 on average. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Would love some local perspective. Any help is appreciated. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The weather takes some getting used to.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.
I've been here 1 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is safety. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Westside side vs the Midtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

Used to live on the The Heights side, now on the Oak Park side. Completely different vibe. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.
