Elgin vs Santa Clarita — which is better to move to?

My partner and I are deciding between Elgin and Nashville-Davidson for our next move. We care most about:
- Cost of living
- Safety
- Job market (finance)
- Outdoor activities

Anyone who's lived in either or both — which would you choose and why?

Been here 20 years. The city has changed a lot but overall for the better.

I'd add that the school system has been improving steadily. Otherwise spot on!

Coming from Chicago, the cost of living difference is noticeable. Groceries and gas are cheaper.

Downtown is overrated and overpriced. The suburbs offer way better value.

I work in logistics and finding a job wasn't hard. Took about 2 months.

As someone who moved here from Philadelphia, I can confirm most of this. The cost of living surprised me the most.

Rent tip: look for places in October-November. Prices drop and there's more availability.

Totally agree with this. I've been here 13 years and my experience is very similar.

Traffic is the worst part honestly. But if you live near work it's fine.

Weather is the biggest factor for us. Four seasons are nice, not too extreme either way.

I'd add that the parks here are amazing for families. Otherwise spot on!

Good summary. I'd rate it higher personally — maybe 8/10.

Don't sleep on Lakewood. It's up and coming and still affordable.

Can confirm the safety issue. But it really depends on the neighborhood. Lakewood and Pine Grove are perfectly safe.
