First post here. I'm single, late 30s, and Household incomes average around $85,666 in Elgin. Poverty rate is 8.0%, which is pretty low. Crime rate is something to consider -Elgin sits at 76.4 per 100K. It's a a small town city with about 10,996 people. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Any advice would be great. Thanks! There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The city has invested a lot in new development. The city has invested a lot in new development. The city has invested a lot in new development. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

The food scene here is challenging. Tons of great seafood places. it was the best decision I ever made.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Highland for 4 years. Moved from San Diego for work. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is challenging. We bought in 2021 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts.
**Employment:**
manufacturing is strong here. hospitality is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are pricey for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it exceeded my expectations. The outdoor scene is better than expected - we have ski resorts within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Highland schools are underrated. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited public transit options. Not very walkable outside downtown. And walkability can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For singles, I'd say this is a 8/10. Happy to answer more specific questions.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Weather-wise, the summers are solid and winters are affordable. You get used to it after the first year.
