Not sure if this has been asked before, but I grew up here but left for a while. The median home value here is around $223,200, which is actually reasonable. The unemployment rate is 3.4%, which is pretty low. Median household income is $56,250, which feels about average for the area. Household incomes average around $56,250 in Elizabethtown. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The weather takes some getting used to. Worth the trade-offs? It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

The food scene here is decent. Tons of great Italian places. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

Weather-wise, the summers are decent and winters are developing. You get used to it after the first year.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value school system, you'll love it. The food scene is genuinely improving and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Tampa and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Sunset. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in retail. If you're in marketing you might struggle.
People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like craft beer.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a chef who relocated here from Boston about 10 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and family.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good schools in most areas
- Good healthcare facilities
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Dating scene is rough
Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are wild, gas is better than expected.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
