Hi all, Military spouse here. Median household income is $56,250, which feels about average for the area. You can expect to pay around $876 for rent here. Poverty rate is 10.6%, which is around average. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. What would you do? Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.
I've been here 6 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is safety. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Pine Hills side vs the Uptown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

I've been here 6 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the dating scene is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is tough.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 1 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it was the best decision I ever made. When I first moved here from Pittsburgh, I was surprised by nightlife. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- The job market scene is improving
The downsides:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Dating scene is rough
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for young professionals. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Hot take but it's not perfect but it works for me. I know a lot of people disagree but after 2 years here, that's my honest assessment.
