The good and bad of living in Elkhart

I'm originally from San Diego and The median home value here is around $99,600, which is actually reasonable. The unemployment rate is 2.6%, which is pretty low. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. What do you all think? Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The city has invested a lot in new development. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Internet is challenging in most areas.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is weather. it's been a really good experience overall. Worth doing your research before committing.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a data analyst, 37, moved here 1 years ago from Atlanta. I've lived in North and Pine Hills, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Limited high-paying job options
3. The traffic situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- North: Great for young professionals. improving vibes, walkable.
- Pine Hills: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Atlanta, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is growing. You can live comfortably on $40K-$90K here.

**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Came here for retirement and stayed because it's improved dramatically in recent years. The healthcare is honestly better than expected and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. I have mixed feelings honestly. Compared to LA it's solid.
