What I wish I knew before living in Elyria

Longtime lurker here, I'm retired and The median home value here is around $142,800, which is actually reasonable. It's a a smaller city city with about 52,833 people. The unemployment rate is 3.4%, which is pretty low. You can expect to pay around $859 for rent here. Household incomes average around $53,204 in Elyria. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

Pros:
- Nice parks and trails
- Growing food scene
- Good schools
- Easy commute

Cons:
- Hot summers
- Rising rent prices
- High property taxes
- Mosquitoes and humidity
What neighborhoods would you suggest? The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The food scene here is surprisingly good. OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a data analyst, 53, moved here 1 years ago from Seattle. I've lived in Fairview and Greenfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Can feel isolated
2. Limited shopping options
3. The community vibe situation is competitive and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Fairview: Great for retirees. decent vibes, walkable.
- Greenfield: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Seattle, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $80K-$90K here.

**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Weather-wise, the summers are challenging and winters are pricey. You get used to it after the first year.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Compared to San Francisco it's tough.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
