Hey everyone, Born and raised here. Average temperature is around 54--F, so expect cold winters. Crime rate is something to consider -Emporia sits at 145.5 per 100K. The unemployment rate is 2.0%, which is pretty low. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Property taxes are high but you get good services. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Anyone in a similar situation? The suburbs are where most families end up. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. I've been living here for 4 years and I'd say it's been a really good experience overall. The food scene is surprisingly good compared to other places I've lived. Overall Good luck with whatever you decide..

The food scene here is surprisingly good. Tons of great Mexican places. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

I work in healthcare here and I have mixed feelings honestly. The job market for my field is better than expected. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.
I've been here 8 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is improving.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Cedar Grove side vs the Downtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Bought a house here in 2023 and it was the best decision I ever made. Property values have gone up a bit since then.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a contractor who relocated here from Pittsburgh about 7 years ago. The main reasons were school and family.
Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Decent public transit for the size
- Close to major attractions
Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Winters are long and cold
Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are pricey, gas is decent.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Good luck with whatever you decide..

My experience has been mostly positive. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The only thing I'd watch out for is public transit. Other than that, Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
