I've been here 11 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the traffic is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the South side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

I've lived in Lakewood for about 12 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's improved dramatically in recent years. When I first moved here from Nashville, I was surprised by public transit. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Active local events and festivals
- The walkability scene is surprisingly good
The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Chain restaurants dominate
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for retirees. Definitely worth checking out..
