First post here. Let me know your thoughts. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely underrated and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Eastside) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

As someone who grew up here, it was the best decision I ever made. A lot has changed in the past few years though. safety used to be much pricey but now it's improving.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a teacher who relocated here from San Diego about 5 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Active local events and festivals
- Good airport with direct flights
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are pricey, gas is tough.
Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Came here for quality of life and stayed because it's exactly what I was looking for. The pet-friendliness is honestly solid and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Public transit is tough here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely hit or miss and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Nashville, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Limited high-paying job options.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it's exactly what I was looking for. Internet is challenging in most areas.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Compared to Houston it's decent.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.
I've been here 10 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The South side vs the The Heights side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Bought a house here in 2022 and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Property values have gone about the same since then.
