Is Eugene worth it salary-wise?

Hey folks, I've been here for 8 years and The unemployment rate is 4.8%, which is about average. It's a a mid-size city city with about 178K people. Property taxes are high but you get good services. What neighborhoods would you suggest? Any help is appreciated.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a HR manager, 43, moved here 14 years ago from Houston. I've lived in Westside and Maple Ridge, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Good healthcare facilities
3. Strong job market in several industries
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The healthcare situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Westside: Great for singles. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- Maple Ridge: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Houston, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $50K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

We moved here with our family and I love the pace of life here. Schools in Springfield area are tough. Kids love it here.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is traffic. I have mixed feelings honestly. Worth doing your research before committing.
