Hi all, I'm retired and You can expect to pay around $1,240 for rent here. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Should I be concerned? Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a accountant who relocated here from Houston about 8 years ago. The main reasons were work and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Close to major attractions
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Not very walkable outside downtown
Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are pricey, gas is underrated.
Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want dating scene, then yeah this place is great. But if housing market matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a HR manager, 49, moved here 7 years ago from Salt Lake City. I've lived in Pine Hills and Maple Ridge, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Nice parks and green spaces
3. Strong job market in several industries
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Nightlife is limited
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The healthcare situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Pine Hills: Great for remote workers. hit or miss vibes, walkable.
- Maple Ridge: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Salt Lake City, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $100K-$90K here.
**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Came here for my partner's job and stayed because the quality of life is solid. The school system is honestly improving and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are affordable, gas is challenging.
Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Hope this helps!.
