Moving to Evanston -what should I know?

First post here. I'm a teacher here and With a population of 11,803, Evanston is a small town. The median home value here is around $236,400, which is actually reasonable. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Thoughts? Thanks in advance! Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

I'm a physical therapist and I've found it exceeded my expectations. The community is excellent and there's always something going on.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a teacher who relocated here from Charlotte about 12 years ago. The main reasons were weather and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Limited entertainment options

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are pricey, gas is decent.

Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Feel free to reach out with questions..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in The Heights for 8 years. Moved from Nashville for a fresh start. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is surprisingly good. We bought in 2019 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.

**Employment:**
healthcare is strong here. construction is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are developing for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The outdoor scene is average - we have hiking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. The Heights schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Urban sprawl is real. Chain restaurants dominate. And cultural scene can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
