Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value safety, you'll love it. The walkability is genuinely challenging and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Uptown) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Public transit is improving here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's been a really good experience overall.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a chef who relocated here from Salt Lake City about 5 years ago. The main reasons were work and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Lots of new development happening
- Active local events and festivals
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Urban sprawl is real
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are manageable, gas is tough.
Socially, it exceeded my expectations. Good luck with whatever you decide..

I've lived in Sunset for about 1 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I genuinely enjoy living here. When I first moved here from Phoenix, I was surprised by walkability. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Four distinct seasons
- Affordable housing options
- The cost of living scene is hit or miss
The downsides:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Limited high-paying job options
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for retirees. Hope this helps!.

Weather-wise, the summers are decent and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.

I'm a electrician who relocated here from Dallas about 11 years ago. The main reasons were weather and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Active local events and festivals

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want cost of living, then yeah this place is great. But if public transit matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

The food scene here is decent. Tons of great sushi places. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.
