What I wish I knew before living in Excelsior Springs

Hey folks, We have two kids and Poverty rate is 9.2%, which is pretty low. Rent is about $907/month for a decent place. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The weather takes some getting used to. Anyone in a similar situation? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want healthcare, then yeah this place is great. But if school system matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are underrated, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a marketing manager, 31, moved here 6 years ago from Chicago. I've lived in Old Town and Maple Ridge, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good internet infrastructure
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Can feel isolated
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The school system situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Old Town: Great for young professionals. challenging vibes, walkable.
- Maple Ridge: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Chicago, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $60K-$130K here.

**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

As someone who grew up here, it's exactly what I was looking for. A lot has changed in the past few years though. housing market used to be much manageable but now it's challenging.
