Raising a family in Exeter -thoughts?

Random thought, I'm retired and Household incomes average around $83,862 in Exeter. With a population of 10,138, Exeter is a small town. Homes are going for about $349,300 on average. The unemployment rate is 2.1%, which is pretty low. Average temperature is around 50--F, so expect cold winters. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The suburbs are where most families end up. The food scene here is surprisingly good.

Pros:
- Nice parks and trails
- Easy commute
- Walkable downtown
- Plenty of shopping options
- Good airport connections

Cons:
- Cold winters
- Few job opportunities in some fields
- Poor road conditions
- Far from major airports
- Chain restaurants dominate
Any advice would be great. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The city has invested a lot in new development. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The suburbs are where most families end up. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The suburbs are where most families end up. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

We moved here with our family and I'm still on the fence after all this time. Schools in Oak Park area are pretty good. Kids love it here.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Compared to Raleigh it's challenging.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from Raleigh and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Cedar Grove. It's tough for what you get.

Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in retail. If you're in government you might struggle.

People: Generally underrated. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Southern.

Hope this helps!.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is food scene. I love the pace of life here. Worth doing your research before committing.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are decent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Bought a house here in 2020 and I genuinely enjoy living here. Property values have gone up a bit since then.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want weather, then yeah this place is great. But if cost of living matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.
