Curious what people think. I'm a college student here and You can expect to pay around $843 for rent here. The median home value here is around $266,800, which seems about average. The suburbs are where most families end up. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Any advice would be great. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Atlanta and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Oak Park. It's surprisingly good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in education. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.
People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like seafood.
Definitely worth checking out..

My experience has been mostly positive. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The only thing I'd watch out for is safety. Other than that, Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Used to live on the Oak Park side, now on the Meadowbrook side. Completely different vibe. it's improved dramatically in recent years.
