Why I chose Fairbanks over bigger cities

So, We have two kids and Average temperature is around 29--F, so bundle up in winter. Rent is about $1,470/month for a decent place. The weather takes some getting used to. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Worth the trade-offs? It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The weather takes some getting used to. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it's not perfect but it works for me. Internet is improving in most areas.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want walkability, then yeah this place is great. But if walkability matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

The food scene here is solid. Tons of great Korean places. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a sales manager who relocated here from Salt Lake City about 5 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and school.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Limited shopping options

Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are pricey, gas is tough.

Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
