So, I grew up here but left for a while. Homes are going for about $1,121,500 on average. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. What are your go-to spots? The city has invested a lot in new development. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.

I've been here 14 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is average.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Lakewood side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Oak Park for 1 years. Moved from Charlotte for my partner's job. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is decent. We bought in 2023 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. The market is competitive but not impossible.

**Employment:**
retail is strong here. manufacturing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are wild for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's not perfect but it works for me. The outdoor scene is tough - we have mountains within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Oak Park schools are better than expected. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Nightlife is limited. Road conditions need improvement. And dating scene can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For retirees, I'd say this is a 7/10. Hope this helps!. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a physical therapist, 43, moved here 12 years ago from Portland. I've lived in Pine Hills and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good healthcare facilities
2. Good internet infrastructure
3. Four distinct seasons
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Road conditions need improvement
3. The public transit situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Pine Hills: Great for singles. decent vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Portland, everything felt improving. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $80K-$120K here.

**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

My experience has been mostly positive. it's been a really good experience overall. The only thing I'd watch out for is housing market. Other than that, It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want cultural scene, then yeah this place is great. But if public transit matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Used to live on the Maple Ridge side, now on the Cedar Grove side. Completely different vibe. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.
