What I wish I knew before living in Fairfax Station
Not sure if this has been asked before, but Born and raised here. The median home value here is around $863,400, which is pretty steep. It's a a small town city with about 12,298 people. Median household income is $212,128, which feels pretty solid for the area. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.
Pros:
- Low taxes
- Strong sense of community
- Walkable downtown
- Good internet infrastructure
Cons:
- Hot summers
- Sprawl everywhere
- High property taxes
- Lack of diversity
- Boring for young people
What would you do? Appreciate any input. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The city has invested a lot in new development. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The suburbs are where most families end up. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The traffic is genuinely improving and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Pine Hills) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Phoenix, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

My experience has been mostly positive. it's been a really good experience overall. The only thing I'd watch out for is dating scene. Other than that, It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've lived in Riverside for about 11 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I'm still on the fence after all this time. When I first moved here from Raleigh, I was surprised by community vibe. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Active local events and festivals
- The school system scene is decent
The downsides:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Homeless population growing downtown

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in North for 14 years. Moved from Charlotte for a job opportunity. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is excellent. We bought in 2018 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.
**Employment:**
hospitality is strong here. hospitality is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are wild for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
the quality of life is solid. The outdoor scene is improving - we have beaches within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. North schools are better than expected. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Property taxes are high. Dating scene is rough. And job market can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**

I'm a accountant who relocated here from San Diego about 13 years ago. The main reasons were work and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Close to major attractions
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Homeless population growing downtown
Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are growing, gas is better than expected.
Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. No regrets on my end..
