Curious what people think. It's a a small town city with about 1,113 people. Homes are going for about $115,600 on average. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Would love some local perspective. The weather takes some getting used to. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a data analyst who relocated here from Boston about 11 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Can feel isolated
- Limited shopping options
Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are affordable, gas is excellent.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.
I've been here 2 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Springfield side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
