Fairmount is underrated, change my mind

Hello, My family moved here when I was a kid. Household incomes average around $163,785 in Fairmount. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. What neighborhoods would you suggest?

Public transit is challenging here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's exactly what I was looking for.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a social worker who relocated here from Charlotte about 12 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Lots of new development happening
- Good internet infrastructure
- Close to major attractions

Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Rising rent and home prices

Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are wild, gas is decent.

Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Weather-wise, the summers are tough and winters are growing. You get used to it after the first year.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.

I've been here 13 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is excellent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Westside side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

Hot take but it exceeded my expectations. I know a lot of people disagree but after 1 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value weather, you'll love it. The weather is genuinely improving and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Downtown) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Baltimore, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
