Fairmount is underrated, change my mind

I grew up here but left for a while. It's a a small town city with about 1,932 people. You can expect to pay around $1,443 for rent here. The weather takes some getting used to. The suburbs are where most families end up. Would love some local perspective.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 13 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Austin, I was surprised by public transit. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Close to major attractions
- The cultural scene scene is underrated

The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Rising rent and home prices

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for couples. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. it's not perfect but it works for me. Compared to Dallas it's average.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.

I've been here 3 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is safety. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is underrated.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Maple Ridge side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Came here for a job opportunity and stayed because I'm still on the fence after all this time. The job market is honestly tough and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value school system, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely decent and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Salt Lake City, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Bought a house here in 2016 and it's improved dramatically in recent years. Property values have gone down slightly since then.
