I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The city has invested a lot in new development. The suburbs are where most families end up. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.

I've been here 6 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Meadowbrook side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. I genuinely enjoy living here. Compared to Houston it's average.

I've lived in South for about 1 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I genuinely enjoy living here. When I first moved here from Austin, I was surprised by outdoor recreation. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Four distinct seasons
- The nightlife scene is decent

The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Limited high-paying job options

Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for singles. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely challenging and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've been here 7 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Fairview side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I'm a social worker and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The community is average and there's always something going on.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are improving, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a sales manager who relocated here from Denver about 13 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and a job opportunity.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good internet infrastructure
- Four distinct seasons
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Limited shopping options

Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are affordable, gas is solid.

Socially, it exceeded my expectations. Happy to answer more specific questions..
