Raising a family in Farmington Hills -thoughts?

Alright, I'm a teacher here and Median household income is $101,863, which feels pretty solid for the area. Homes are going for about $333,200 on average. Crime rate is something to consider -Farmington Hills sits at 107.1 per 100K. Poverty rate is 4.3%, which is pretty low. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

Pros:
- Good job market
- Growing food scene
- Low taxes
- Easy commute
- Good airport connections

Cons:
- Limited nightlife
- Limited dining options
- High property taxes
- Poor road conditions
- Not enough green space
Would love some local perspective. Appreciate any input. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The suburbs are where most families end up. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a contractor, 56, moved here 4 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in Oak Park and Maple Ridge, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good internet infrastructure
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Four distinct seasons
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Can feel isolated
3. The traffic situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Oak Park: Great for families. tough vibes, walkable.
- Maple Ridge: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $50K-$80K here.

**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Used to live on the Riverside side, now on the Highland side. Completely different vibe. it was the best decision I ever made.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely tough and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (South) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Denver, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.

I've been here 13 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is better than expected.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the Fairview side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..
