The good and bad of living in Farmington

Hi all, I'm a 45-year-old police officer and The unemployment rate is 3.2%, which is pretty low. Rent is about $993/month for a decent place. It's a a smaller city city with about 46,339 people. Poverty rate is 12.9%, which is around average. The median home value here is around $225,400, which is actually reasonable. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Pros:
- Friendly people
- Lots of new development
- Walkable downtown
- Plenty of shopping options

Cons:
- Limited public transit
- Limited nightlife
- Limited dining options
- High property taxes
- Homelessness issues downtown
Cheers. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is dating scene. it's exactly what I was looking for. Worth doing your research before committing.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a accountant, 40, moved here 10 years ago from Raleigh. I've lived in Eastside and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Homeless population growing downtown
3. The cultural scene situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Eastside: Great for remote workers. hit or miss vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Raleigh, everything felt improving. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $70K-$100K here.

**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
